AIR TRANSPOTATION

We would love to discuss, to elaborate the fastest transportation in world. Do you know what is the fastest transport in the world? Haa.. Mind if i told you? The fastest transportation in world is rocket. But, the point that we are going to discuss about are, the fastest transportation in logistics. The aircraft is the second fastest method of transport, after the pipeline inventory. Single-engine aircraft 175 kilometers per hour (109 mph). Aviation is able to quickly transport people and limited amounts of cargo over longer distances, but the disadvantage is high costs and energy use. Normally when we talk about the aviation or airlines transportation its related to whole world because the airline system is used in many country.

Air freight has become more common used to transport the products of high value which the cargo is expensive to handle and store such as gold and expensive car. Another reason to use this mode of transportation is the subject to quick obsolescence because the cycle life of the cargo is easy to expired. Perishable product also can use this aviation to transport such as fresh flower, fresh fruit like strawberry, blueberry and so on. Some user or customer willing to pay for the expensive service that provided by the airline system because of they want to send the product or cargo as soon as possible. For example, normally some company who deal with their customer at the other country they would like to send the sample of product as soon as possible, so they willingness to pay the service to make sure that their customer get the satisfaction from the company.

Although, time has become especially important in regards to principles such as  postponements and just-in-time within the value chain, resulting in a high willingness to pay for quick delivery of key components or items of high value-to-weight ratio. In addition to mail, common items send by air include electronics and fashion clothing.
The majority of aircraft also need an airport with the infrastructure to receive maintenance, restocking, refueling and for the loading and unloading of crew, cargo and passengers. While the vast majority of aircraft land and take off on land, some are capable of takes off and landing on ice, snow and calm water.

For short distances or in inaccessible places helicopters can be used. The primary advantages of the helicopter are due to the rotor blades that revolve through the air, providing lift without requiring the aircraft to move forward. This creates the ability for the helicopter to take off and land vertically without a runway. For this reason, helicopters are often used in congested or isolated areas where fixed-wing aircraft cannot take off or land.
It is estimated that up to 500,000 people are on planes at any time.
The following are the primary reasons for the growth in air cargo:

  • Deregulation and liberalization of the air cargo industry.
  • Global interdependence helped by world trade agreements.
  • International production and sales of goods and services.
  • New inventory management concepts such as Just-in time and "zero" stocks.
  • New air - eligible commodities.
  • The vast development of high value and limited time - consumable commodities.

In air cargo operations they are two types of carriers, airlines that carry cargo as a sideline (which carry passenger and cargo) and dedicated air cargo carriers (which carry cargo only).

For air cargo carries they have evolved into three forms which is integrated carriers that provides door to door service such as FedEx and UPS. Scheduled carries are typically airlines offering cargo services such as MASkargo. For charter carries are the specialized all-cargo carries include the specialized product such as Department of Defense (US) uses charter carries to transport their personnel and supplies.

There are four types of cargo which is:

1
Bellyspace
This space in the belly of a passenger plane, normally used for luggage. ( passenger and cargo are bring together in one plane)
2
Flexbelly
Some planes are basically passenger planes, but interior it can be adjust to include more or less space for cargo or passenger.
3
Freighter
This plane just used for cargo. Freighter planes build for this purpose normally would not include windows, since there is no need for windows along the body of the plane.
4
Truck
Major airlines have been replacing their larger planes with smaller planes for shorter flight. This can reduce cargo space available.

Here some advantages of using air transportation. First the most advantages is it the movement of the goods can delivered very fast. Air transport is the fastest mode of transport and therefore suitable carriage of goods over a long distance requiring less time. There is no substitute for air transport when the transport of goods is required urgently. Second, the warehousing costs can be reduced to the minimum. It is suitable for the transportation of the perishable goods because air transport provides comfortable, efficient and quick transport service. It is regarded as best mode of transport. Besides that, the risk associated with deterioration and obsolescence of the goods are reduce. Although, the insurance premium in the case of air transport is lower as compared to the sea transport in view of the reduced level of risks. Another advantages is the losses due to rough handling, breakage and pilferage are also can be reduced to the minimum.

All modes of transportation have their advantages and disadvantages. For disadvantages of air transportation is air transport is the most risky form of transport because a minor accident may put a substantial loss to the goods, passengers and the crew. The chances of accidents are greater in comparison to other modes of transport.

Next, the operational cost for air transportation is become very high costly day by day with rising operational costs. In the investments  to creation of aviation facilities required is high investment. The Government is least capable of increasing the number of planes and airports in the country. The private sector has its own limitations. There are no adequate facilities to train a large number of pilots in the country. On privatization of airlines we are again facing the problem of sufficient trained staff.

That’s all for our free topic for this week, we hope that the information is very helped to understanding in the air transportation modes.
